BitTorrent is a great technology to share large files with a massive audience, but it’s also one of the least private tools to communicate on the Internet. Everything shared online via BitTorrent is visible to the public and often put in a database by one of the many monitoring companies that map downloading habits. To protect themselves against this unwanted surveillance as well as other evils, many BitTorrent users have signed up for anonymizing services such as VPNs. A wise choice, but unfortunately this doesn’t guarantee one’s privacy. If for some reason the connection with the VPN is lost, BitTorrent downloads will simply continue while broadcasting one’s residential IP-address. Thus far Vuze is the only BitTorrent client that has a “connect through VPN only” option built-in, but for those who use uTorrent or other clients there’s now an open source application called VPNWatcher that does the same. The Windows application was released a short while ago by Freddi, a 32-year-old coder from Germany who currently works as a Java developer in the tourism industry…
